More Details Helpful Information

Henna is a plant whose leaves are dried and ground into a powder that are used as a red dye. This dye is used as a natural hair dye to get a range of different colors in a safe non-damaging hair dye. Using a combination of henna and indigo yields a range of colors from red, reddish brown, dark brown, and even black. Used alone henna dyes the hair red.

Our BAQ Jamila henna is pure henna (lawsonia enermis) of the highest quality.

How much henna/indigo do I need?

  • Short Hair (Chin Length) = 1 pack or less
  • Shoulder Length = 1-2 packs
  • Mid-Back Length = 2-3 packs
  • Waist Length = 3-5 packs
If you have curly or exceptionally thick hair add an extra pack, just to be safe.

Henna Hair Dye Instructions

As with all hair dyes, the color of your hair will change the final results. You can test results by doing a strand test in and inconspicuous area or on hair taken from your hair brush.

Allergies to both henna and indigo are extremely rare, but always do a patch test before using any cosmetic or dye.

There are two sets of instructions depending on what your end result goals are for your hair

Red Hair Tones Using Henna

If you are looking for red, you only need henna with NO indigo. the lighter your hair, the more red the color.

  • On white blond or gray hair, you will get a super bold coppery red color.
  • Light brown hair yields an auburn color that varies in darkness and brownness depending on the base color of your hair.
  • Dark brown or black hair gets glossy red highlights in the sun.
Dying the hair red with henna is a one step application process.

  • Mix henna powder using our henna for hair instructions.
  • Once henna is ready, apply henna paste to your hair (using gloves).
  • Apply hair cap or wrap hair and leave paste on for 2-4 hours.
  • Rinse clean and condition well. Conditioner makes rinsing paste our of the hair easier.
  • Optional: Blow dry hair for 10-15 minutes to help set color.
Important! This is NOT the final color of your hair. The color will oxidize over the next 1-3 days to reach it's full color.

Brown Hair Tones Using Indigo and Henna

This is a one step process, but keep in mind to allow dye release time for henna.

  • Mix henna using our basic henna hair dye instructions.
  • Once henna is ready (meaning dye release has happened) mix indigo powder using our basic indigo hair dye mixing instructions in a separate bowl.
  • Mix the henna and indigo pastes together.
  • Apply the paste mixture to your hair (using gloves).
  • Apply hair cap or wrap hair and leave paste on for 2-4 hours.
  • Rinse clean and condition well. Conditioner makes rinsing paste out of the hair easier.
  • Optional: Blow dry hair for 10-15 minutes to help set color.

Important! This is not the final color of your hair. The color will oxidize over the next 1-3 days to reach the full color.

The more indigo you use the darker brown your hair will be. Some experimentation may be in order to find the perfect shade for you and your hair.

Approximate ratios of henna to indigo:
Three or four parts henna to one part indigo gives a reddish brown color.
Equal amounts of henna to indigo will give a brown color.
One part henna to three or four parts indigo yields a dark brown color.

If you are just trying to tone down the red of henna, add indigo one tablespoon at a time until you reach the desired color.

Pure Rich Black Using Indigo and Henna

To get a rich black color use this two step process.

  • Dye hair with pure henna using our basic henna hair dye instructions.
When rinsing hair, do not use shampoo OR conditioner.
  • Towel dry hair.
  • Mix indigo powder using our basic indigo hair dye mixing instructions.
  • Apply indigo to the hair (using gloves).
  • Apply hair cap or wrap hair and leave indigo on for 2-4 hours.

If your hair is already black, you can apply indigo without henna to deepen your natural color. Indigo is not generally used alone EXCEPT on already black hair.
